Petworth is extremely well located and is surrounded by privately owned estates, which offer both great walking and various events throughout the year.
Petworth House itself is set within 800 acres of parkland, which is home to many hundreds of deer. The house has one of the largest art collections in the country including many works by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Blake.
Goodwood, which is 7 miles south of Petworth, is famous for both horse racing, Glorious Goodwood, a 5 day meeting held at the end of July, and then for the Festival of Speed held at the beginning of July and The Revival which is held in September. There are also numerous small race meetings held throughout the year.
Cowdray Park, located 5 miles west of Petworth, hosts about 450 polo matches a year, including the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup. The season begins at the end of April and runs through to the end of September.
Parham Park, situated 7 miles east of Petworth is open from the beginning of April through to the end of October. The house is home to many rare and precious collections of paintings, furniture, needlework and antiquities. The gardens consist of 7 acres of Pleasure Grounds and a 4 acre Walled Garden all of which sit in the middle of 875 acres.
What must be mentioned is what all of the above have in common and what makes them even more stunning and alluring is that the backdrop to all this beauty is enhanced by the magnificent and every changing splendor of The South Downs.
